A Louis XVI mahogany four-door cabinet - the Netherlands - circa 1780/1800

US$2,722.64

An 18th century four-door (linen) cabinet made of oak and mahogany and glued with finely drawn mahogany veneer, during the Dutch Louis XVI period about 1780-1800. Such cabinets are popularly known as "fence cabinets" because of the gallery on the top.. The top is richly decorated with; different profiled moldings, the gallery with refined twisted balusters and in the centre carving with garlands and ears of wheat. Behind the doors of the wall unit, there are three adjustable solid oak wooden shelves. And behind the doors of the base cabinet, there are two fixed solid oak wooden shelves. The doors are fitted with very sophisticated profiled moldings with recessed corners. All doors still have their original hinges, bolts and locks that work with one key. Also the cast and gilded brass key entrances are original and decorated with a classic vase, garlands, pearl list and various flower & scroll motifs. The diagonal side frames are fitted with three flutings The stately tapered front legs are also fitted with three flutings on the visible sides. These (linen-) cabinet models are quite rare, mostly there are only two doors in the wall cabinet and three drawers in the base cabinet. Four-door cabinets can be found, but are (almost) always a print cabinet. This is an original four-door (linen) cabinet! The cabinet is not heavy or solid in design but it is heavy in terms of material use heavy and very solidly made, which is somewhat unusual for the normally "efficient Dutch" use of material. The cabinet can be disassembled for the most part, which makes it easier to handle and most importantly, lighter in weight. The original (oak) wooden counter pins were previously (probably in the 19th century) replaced with metal pins. The hood, sides with doors, rear wall (made of one piece, by two nailed slats) and shelves are loose parts after disassembling. To make everything even lighter, the four doors can also be screwed apart! A sleek, stately and quite rare original piece of furniture with a beautiful warm gold-orange brown colour in the mahogany veneer, that looks very fine because of the silky gloss of the authentic wax finish!Dimensions: Height: 244 cm, width: 170 cm, depth: 59 cm
